Residential Energy Assessment Program
Understanding how energy is used in the home can often open the door to reducing energy consumption and lowering energy costs. With the Residential Energy Assessment program, available through the City of Rocky Mount, customers can learn how energy is used in their home, how to reduce consumption, and how to reduce energy costs. The City of Rocky Mount provides this service to customers at no cost. The City of Rocky Mount performs assessments to help customers identify low cost and no cost ways to lower utility bills using a combination of efficient operations. Cost cutting and saving opportunities are examined for electric, natural gas, water and sewer usage.
Each energy assessment involves an in-depth review of the customer’s home and energy habits. The process takes approximately an hour and a half to complete. The energy assessor begins by reviewing a twelve month billing history with the customer. By looking at a twelve month history, the customer is able to see a comparison of month to month energy usage.
After reviewing the energy usage history, the customer is given an energy kit that contains various items to help reduce energy usage. Energy kits include four compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL), a low flow shower head, twenty switch and outlet seals, an air filter whistle, a hot water gauge, a refrigerator thermometer, and a portable thermometer to check for temperature consistency through out the home. Next, the customer accompanies the assessor through the home to identify potential energy savings. At the end of the assessment the customer is given a report detailing any findings with recommendations on specific ways to save energy. Often times, customers are able to take advantage of low cost or no cost methods of saving energy.

Commercial/Industrial Energy Assessment Program
Through a partnership with ElectriCities, the City of Rocky Mount provides a commercial and industrial energy assessment program. This program identifies energy saving opportunities by analyzing existing facilities and making recommendations for energy efficient practices and technology. The assessor reviews the customer's usage history prior to the assessment. The Utilities Marketing Representative coordinates the scheduling of the assessment between the customer and the assessor. Assessments are scheduled during operational hours to get accurate insight into the normal business activity and production.
An in-depth assessment is taken of the facilities, mechanical systems and equipment. Energy saving opportunities are identified during the assessment and recommendations are documented in a detailed report given to the customer.

Energy Efficient Tax Credits
Renewable Energy Policy
Rocky Mount Public Utilities implemented a Renewable Energy Policy in 2008. This policy gives customers the opportunity to generate energy from renewable sources, such as wind and solar power. The City will pay the customer for electricity generated from their renewable energy source. Customers may also be eligible for credits from NC Green Power. The City created the policy to encourage customers to install renewable energy sources. New Construction and retrofit projects for residential and small commercial electric customers are eligible. Residential customers can generate up to 10kW and small commercial properties can generate up to 100 kW. A utility representative is available to walk customers through the process to ensure all steps are completed and all local, state, and federal regulations are met.
Harnessing clean energy sources is essential to creating a clean energy future. As the demand for more energy continues to grow, the need to build generation facilities continues to grow too. Renewable energy sources offer ways to avoid building expensive generation facilities, depleting finite resources and creating a clean energy source.
Using renewable energy is not only good for the environment, but it is helpful to local economies. It also aids in stabilizing fuel supplies, and cost, helps reduce dependence on foreign energy sources, and helps improve regional air quality.
