From the Director

On behalf of the men and women of the City of Rocky Mount Public Works Department, Welcome. For those of you not familiar with the department, our employees provide or assist with the delivery of many of the services that city residents receive on a weekly, if not daily, basis. Services provided by the department range from maintenance of the city's street and drainage infrastructure, repair and maintenance of the city's fleet of vehicles and equipment, solid waste collection, enforcement of the minimum housing code and public nuisance ordinances, to administration of the Stormwater Utility. Regardless of the service provided, the Department is committed to providing service in a timely, professional, and efficient manner. This webpage is but one example of this commitment. In addition to providing timely updates to our customers regarding the services we provide, you will also find information regarding each Division within the department and their core responsibilities.

It is my hope that you will find our webpage easy to use and packed with useful information. Should you require any additional assistance or have a suggestion regarding an enhancement to our webpage, however, feel free to contact us at 252-972-1290 or email me at jonathan.boone@rockymountnc.gov.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Public Works Department is to provide quality public services in a timely, professional, efficient, and responsive manner and in such a way that they promote a high quality of life for city residents and contribute to the safe movement of people and goods while protecting the environment, public health, and safety.

Department Background

The Public Works Department is comprised of 160 employees across 5 divisions responsible for maintaining and enhancing quality of life through the delivery of services essential to urban and suburban environments. The Divisions include Administration, Streets/Stormwater, Fleet Maintenance, Environmental Services, and Community Code Enforcement. The Streets Division, along with Stormwater Services (an enterprise fund), maintains the City's network of roadways, sidewalks, and drainage channels. Fleet Maintenance provides preventative maintenance and repair services for most of the City's vehicular fleet, including heavy equipment vehicles. Environmental Services provides weekly trash and recycling pickup to most City residences and businesses, as well as manages a solid waste transfer station used by residences, private solid waste haulers, and other businesses. Community Code enforces local regulations regarding the condition of property, works to mitigate blight and abandonment conditions that pose health and safety hazards, and monitors and neutralizes the presence of mosquitoes
